WC 2017 Bratislava Slovakia
Game 3 - 27/6/17 @ 19.00
Team GB 7 - Australia 1
The best way to get into a game and settle the nerves is to get an early goal, this early goal came from the stick of Ben Lowe assisted by Robertson and Yeardley with less than a minute on the clock the teams then traded hooking penalties and on the Australian penalty Danny Hutchinson poked away the puck between the keeper and post after the keeper fumbled the puck and the defence failed to get the puck away. Nathan Finney picks up the puck at the half way line and skates at speed to the net and fired it away to give GB a three goal lead with 7 minutes and 42 seconds gone. And so the first period ends with team GB 3 – 0 up.
Early in the second period Team GB absolutely pulled the Aussies defence apart in front of the goal in a move straight from a practice session allowing Karl Niamatali to fire the puck away after pinpoint passing between him and line mates Sam Jones and James Archer at the 19 th minutes Australia changed their netminder but this was not much help two minutes later when Alex Kingston picked up after a poor clearance along the boards and skated it down on net, he faked the keeper one way and then slotted it in behind him. Forty seconds later Karl Niamatali stepped up again and put another goal on the scoreboard assisted by Captain Richard Walsh. The half ended with GB having a commanding lead of 6 goals to nil.
There was no scoring in the second period and throughout the first three periods it should be noted how well rookie netminder Miles Finney played at times he had nothing to do but when called upon he easily dealt with what was being fired at him.
Into the final period team GB's Karl Niamatali receives a 10 minute misconduct for shooting the puck after the whistle, then at 41.27 Ben Lowe skates ¾ of the rink to put away GB's seventh goal, however just over a minute later Australia get the one and only consolation goal, at 44.51 there was some pushing and shoving between Australia's Fitzgerald and Sam Jones which escalated into slashing however the Australians spearing at the end of the incident overstepped the mark for which he was ejected from the game with a major plus misconduct, even though Team GB were on the powerplay for the last 3 minutes and 10 seconds of the game which they controlled and did not push themselves, and the game ended 7-1
With 7 rookies on the team it was always going to take them time to settle down and work out the lines and how they were going to play, it's fair to say Team GB have things sorted now and look like the Team they had the potential to be.
