WC 2017 Bratislava Slovakia

Game 1 - 25/6/17 @ 19.00

Team GB 4 Vs Latvia 7

The first period ended 0-0 after an early chance to take the lead when GB were awarded a penalty shot after Daniel Hutchinson was tripped on a breakaway the Latvians elected to change up their netminder for the penalty shot and this was obviously a pre-game strategy as the new netminder saved Danny's shot, the rest of the period it was a controlled game from GB in which they had to kill off two separate penalties Miles Finney in net pulled off some great saves to keep GB in the game and the period ended tied 0-0

Two minutes into the second period Nathan Finney and Richard Walsh combined to set up Ashley Jackson for his debut goal, at the 18 minute mark Team GB took another penalty which gave the Latvians another powerplay again Team GB killed off this powerplay. At 20.49 Latvia scored thier equalising goal and less than a minute later Team GB took another penalty and Latvia scored on the subsequent powerplay, with just under a minute to go Latvia put another goal onto the score board and the first half finished 1-3

In the second period the two team's traded a goal a piece with Daniel Robertson scoring a fantastic goal to open his account for team with a laser of a shot across the netminder into the roof of the net assited by Sam Jones and Leigh Marrow. The third period ended with the 2 goal gap remaining 2-4.

With just over a minute gone in the fourth period Team GB took another penalty and the Latvians capitalised on the power play very quickly to go three in front. At the 41 minute mark Ben Lowe skated at speed down the wing drawing the lone Latvian player over to him and then Ben pin point passed the puck over to a hard skating Sam Jones who riffled the shot past the Lativain keeper. Two minutes later James Archer stepped up and put away GB's fourth goal assisted by rookie Josh Ursell, with just a single goal down GB really looked back into the game and momentum looked like it was swinging there way however just over two minutes later Latvia scored their sixth goal, with just over a minute to go Team GB pulled their netminder for the extra skater however with ten seconds to go Latvia scored into the empty net.

On the plus side for Team GB has been the intergration of the 7 rookie players who all played their part in this game. Latvia are a much improved skating team than the one that played two years ago and they will be a tough team to beat this year but this is only the preliminary round game with team GB still finding the feet.
