WC 2015 Tampere Finland

Game 2

Great Britain 5 - Austria 4

The team came through a tough character searching game to win by one goal.

As we said in our match preview Austria had a poor opening game and that it might spur them on well it did indeed they came out a lot stronger however they did not dominate the game and the score line flattered them greatly.

Two of Austria's opening goals were whilst they were effectively whilst they were on the powerplay because of infractions that had been previously let go earlier on in the game for both sides, this was late in first period and early in the second period with the Austrian's scoring their third goal two and half minutes into the second making it 3-0 to Austrian's the signs looked ominous for team GB and team looked set for a tough mission in front of them but with goals from James Archer and Rob Shelton midway through the second period the game did not look out of the reach of the Brits however the Austrians did nothing to settle onlookers nerves as they put a fourth goal onto the scoreboard with under two minutes on the scoreboard to finish the first half of the game with a 4-2 lead.

Team GB settle down to work as they had done later in the second period during the third period and their efforts were rewarded with a first IIHF goal for Lee Marrow assisted by Lowe and Niamatali, Karl Niamatali tied the game at 34.33 with a goal assisted by Finney and Shelton after the team had killed a third shorthanded penalty.

A mere 34 seconds into the final Team GB's Sam Jones skated from his own half and slotted the puck through the legs of the Austrian keepers legs for what was the last and game winning goal of the game, the team had to endure and soak up the pressure of the Austrian's whilst they wer on the powerplay late on in the game however this was after a long period of play where GB controlled the puck either high in the Austrian zone or in their own half respect was shown to the GB team during this time as the Austrians did not pressure the puck or chase after it presumably in the fear of what GB could do on the break.

The game finished 5-4 in GB's favour and a big credit must go to the coaching team who were able to change the formation and tactics of the team as the game went on.
