2011 WC Game Report

Game 3: - 20 June 2011

Great Britain 7 vs South Africa 0

This game on paper meant nothing as GB had already topped the group with tier win against Austria

This was a total control hockey game with GB enjoying the majority of the possession of the puck, a no time was there a feeling that Great Britain would not win.

Throughout this game South Africa tried to play defensive hockey with GB controlling the puck and moving it around inside the South African defensive zone, this worked for nearly all the first period, however John Dolan scored @ 11.20 assisted by Walsh and Hamer, with three minutes gone in the second period John Dolan was again on the score sheet, again assisted by Hamer and Walsh, the third and Dolan's straight hat trick came at 17.45 with Hamer and Walsh assisting yet again.

At half time GB were reminded by coach Silitoe what it will take to progress to the gold. In the second half of the game Great Britain dominated the game with their possession and at 28:14 Jack Clarkson scored the fourth goal assisted by Matt Viney and Dan Clarkson. At 30:59 the fifth goal was scored by ever hard working Karl Niamatali who had control of the puck in the corner of the rink then when down on water leaking from the roof, got up circled the net and put the puck away after a pass from Daniel Hutchinson. The next goal did not come for another 14 minutes which was solo effort from captain Richard Walsh, not to be outdone by his brother Dan Clarkson closed out the scoring @ 45:33 assisted by his brother Jack and Alex Pearman

Great Britain's dominance of this game was born by the fact that they had 42 shots on goal to South Africa's 16, although he only faced 16 shots Alex Birch deserved the man of the match award not just because it was a very rare inline hockey shutout but also because when he had to make the saves he did so with great discipline and skill.
