IIHF IN-LINE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS | GERMANY 2009
Great Britain 5-2 Japan
Thursday 11th June 2009
Great Britain moved into the semi-finals of Division One after an excellent win against Japan in Ingolstadt, Germany. A Phil Hamer hat-trick was the star performance on the stats sheet but credit to Nathan Finney with three assists. Richard Walsh also had a fine afternoon scoring his first GB goal and adding an assist. However it was not all plain sailing with GB committing a barrage of penalties, some clear cut, others not so much, and facing at one stage almost eight consecutive minutes of powerplay.
After dominating the first period but failing to make a breakthrough GB took the lead through Hamer after a superb work from Finney early in the second period and made it two soon after through a rocket slapshot from point by Walsh. However in the third period Remi Moses was given a four minute major and game misconduct for an innocuous hit, and with GB commiting several more minor offences were left facing an ongoing powerplay for much of the period. But with James Tanner outstanding in net, Japan managed to find the net only once.
Into the final period and Dan Hutchinson made it 3-1, before Hamer added his second for 4-1. Japan rallied to 4-2 and with two bench minors causing late concerns Hamer sealed his hat-trick with an empty net goal. Outshooting their opponents 30-21 despite the lengthy spell in the penalty box GB were very impressive.
